Designing Enterprise AI Infrastructure: Lessons From Hyperscaler AI Networks

AI infrastructure is increasingly constrained by networking, not compute. As accelerator performance improves, network architecture has become the primary determinant of utilization, reliability, and overall infrastructure efficiency. Based on analysis of the AI network fabrics used by major hyperscalers, this Gartner research outlines practical design principles enterprises can adopt to improve AI infrastructure performance, resilience, and scalability. 

The report explains how hyperscalers treat networking as a system-level component rather than a supporting layer. While most organizations cannot replicate hyperscale architectures, they can selectively adopt proven practices that improve AI workload performance and operational outcomes without introducing unnecessary complexity. 

Key recommendations include deploying a dedicated AI back-end network, standardizing on Ethernet-based AI fabrics with RDMA (RoCE), investing in telemetry and observability, and focusing design efforts on the scale-out network where performance, reliability, and efficiency are most directly influenced. Gartner also emphasizes prioritizing reliability, fault isolation, congestion management, and workload-aware architectures over peak performance metrics alone.

The research highlights three major shifts shaping enterprise AI networking: Ethernet becoming the default AI fabric, reliability emerging as the primary driver of effective performance, and workload characteristics increasingly determining network design decisions. Training, inference, and mixture-of-experts workloads generate different traffic patterns that require different networking considerations.
